Tech giant Meta has started banning under-16 users from Instagram, Facebook and Threads ahead of Australia’s world-first social media ban on 10 December.
Users were given the option to verify that they were over 16 or download their content before their account is deactivated, which they can then re-access once they turn 16.
Underage users are now also banned from creating new accounts and have been flocking to other apps such as Lemon8 and Yope, which have been put on notice by the eSafety commissioner.
Communications Minister Anika Wells said the commissioner “will watch and respond to migratory patterns".
“If LinkedIn becomes a secret online meeting place for under-16s, I will not hesitate to act,” she said.
