Composer Feature: Viola Yip
“In my recent works, I have been interested in looking into what musical bodies could offer by creating new works at the intersection of music composition and performance. On one hand, I have been incorporating performers’ embodied musical skills and techniques in performing sounding objects. On the other hand, I have been investigating the musicality of visuality through returning to the idea of how we conceptualize music. I like to reflect on and rethink our performing and listening bodies, and consider them as forms of sonic technology in creating new experience.”
A Native of Hong Kong, Viola Yip is a New York-based experimental composer, performer and curator. Her works and performances have appeared in places such as Moxsonic Festival, Women Composers Festival of Hartford, Ravinia Festival, University of Florida, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, UC San Diego, Brandeis University, Peabody Institute, NASA saxophone conference, Pausa Art House in Buffalo, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Hong Kong City Hall and Radio 4 at Radio and Television Hong Kong, Abrons Arts Center, The DiMenna Center for Classical Music, Secret Theater and Flushing Town Hall in NYC, unternehmen mitte in Basel and University of Huddersfield. She is currently pursuing her PhD in music composition at Graduate School of Arts and Science of New York University.
