A recent JetBlue A320 incident, where the aircraft suddenly lost altitude and was forced into an emergency descent, has led Airbus engineers and regulators to a disturbing conclusion. Analysis of the flight-control data showed that intense solar radiation can corrupt data used by the A320-family flight control computers.
In response, Airbus has issued a precautionary action and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has published an Emergency Airworthiness Directive. Airlines worldwide have been told to install urgent software updates and, in some cases, hardware changes on A319, A320 and A321 aircraft. Up to 6,000 A320-family jets – around half of the global fleet – may require changes, and airlines are already reporting delays, cancellations and groundings while the work is done.
So far, this directive applies to Airbus A320-family aircraft, not to Boeing. That is why you see Airbus in the headlines and Boeing relatively quiet. But it is important to understand the bigger picture: the trigger here is solar radiation during a period of high solar activity. Solar storms do not care about the logo on the tail. They can interfere with GPS, radio links, satellites and electronics on any aircraft at cruising altitude.
We are now in Solar Maximum for Solar Cycle 25, a peak in the Sun’s activity. Space-weather agencies expect more storms over the next year or two, and some of them could be stronger than the storm that triggered this recall. A severe storm can affect aviation, satellite constellations, and even power grids on the ground.
