Bilateral drawing gives the body a gentle way to express what’s hard to articulate — without forcing you to talk through it or relive it.
The slow, intentional movement brings awareness back to the body and the present moment, bypassing overthinking and encouraging mindfulness.
And because bilateral drawing works through symbol and movement instead of language, it can open creativity and emotional expression in places where words feel blocked.
If you’d like more gentle ways to process emotions without having to analyze them, I’ve created a free resource you can download. Comment “Resource,” and I’ll send you the link.
Here are several prompts you can use to guide your bilateral drawing (or, you can just free flow drawing, letting your body lead!):
1. “Draw what calm feels like.” Use color, shape, and movement to mirror your body’s sense of calm, even if you can’t feel it yet.
2. “Mirror the movement your body wants.” Close your eyes for a moment. Notice any impulse to move. Then let both hands reflect that impulse — slow or fast, sharp or soft.
3. “What does support look like?” Let both hands draw an abstract representation of support. It might be a shape, a line, a color, a rhythm.
4. “Draw your before and after.” On one half of the page, mirror the energy or emotion of a difficult state (e.g. anxiety, shutdown). On the other half, draw what ease or release might feel like.
5. “Draw your breath.” Let your hands move with the rhythm of your inhale and exhale. Loops, waves, spirals, lines — whatever emerges in sync with your breathing.
