Breaking the stereotype of 3D printed dolls
Unfortunately, printed BJDs often have a poor reputation — many are made with basic, inexpensive resins designed for prototyping, not for long-term use. Most resins were never intended for creating a finished product.
As a 3D designer and experienced 3D printing artist, I’ve always worked with top-grade resins when making my demo dolls. For years, I created a custom blend of three professional resins, each adding different qualities: flexibility, strength, durability, color density, and surface finish. At the core of this mix was Resione Anti-Impact, which allowed me to produce prototypes that still remain in my collection today — without losing their qualities.
Recently, Resione introduced their new Wear-Resistant BJD Resin, and for me it has completely replaced my previous formula. This material was developed specifically for dollmakers: it’s strong, durable, resistant to scratches and friction, and provides a smooth, beautiful surface. In my opinion, dolls printed with it are virtually indistinguishable from those cast in polyurethane.
With this post, I want to share with my colleagues and collectors that 3D printed BJDs are not always fragile or low-quality. It’s time to move past this stereotype — and thanks to Resione, I believe we can.
