New Report Highlights Investment Impact of BSL
Teaching of British Sign Language (BSL) to young deaf children and their families delivers an impressive economic return on investment, according to a new report.
The Value of British Sign Language – An Economic Analysis, commissioned by the British Deaf Association from RAND Europe, models lifetime outcomes based on deaf people and their families being able to learn BSL as their first language from an early age.
Key findings include:
- For every 1 of investment in early BSL access, the return is estimated at 14 in long‐term benefits including improved education, employment and wellbeing.
- BSL is shown to be a significant asset to individuals, families and wider society, not solely a tool for access.
- Policy makers and service providers are urged to treat BSL as an integral part of inclusive strategy, ensuring timely and equitable access for Deaf children and adults.
