Japan’s New PM Fast-Tracks Military Spending — Defense Budget to Hit 2% of GDP a Year Early
Japan’s new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has announced that the country will boost its defense budget faster than planned, reaching its target of 2% of GDP by next year — a full year ahead of schedule.
Speaking in her first policy speech to parliament, Takaichi said Japan must “drastically strengthen its defense capabilities” as the world faces new types of warfare and rising global tensions.
The original plan set the 2% goal for 2027, but Takaichi now wants it met by March 2026.
She also revealed plans to revise Japan’s main security policies — including the National Security Strategy — earlier than expected to reflect today’s rapidly changing threats.
The current strategy, written in 2022, gave Japan the right to launch counterstrikes if attacked but banned preemptive strikes. It also outlined major investments in new weapons.
To strengthen its military, Japan is:
Extending the range of its homegrown Type-12 missiles
Developing hypersonic weapons
Buying U.S.-made Tomahawk cruise missiles
Analysts say the move signals Takaichi’s determination to make Japan a stronger, more independent military power amid growing concerns over China, North Korea, and global instability.
