Education in Action is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide hands-on learning opportunities that educate and inspire for real world success. Exchange City, facilitated by local non-profit Education in Action, is an immersive educational program that connects classroom lessons with real life experiences. Middle schools throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts that participate in this program incorporate nearly 15 hours of civics, entrepreneurship, language arts and financial literacy lessons into their plans followed by the opportunity to apply what they have learned by running Exchange City, a fully functional economy, for a day. Before their arrival, students must create resumes, apply for jobs, prepare budgets and write laws. By participating in this real-life simulation, they are improving their professional skill set as they are required to work together, give presentations and solve typical issues that arise in a professional environment.
Education in Action is funded by local companies and other organizations that are committed to educating the Rhode Island community. Through their support, they can directly help to educate students in the basics of economic principles and build their understanding about the free enterprise system. Ultimately, their investment will help those students to become better prepared as business leaders, employees, entrepreneurs, produce producers and consumers.
