As lovers of all things swing dancing, it is important to recognise our responsibility as guests in this Black American art form, and do what we can to encourage each other to learn and engage with the cultural and historical context of Lindy Hop and Jazz. Therefore we will be regularly sharing our learning about the history of Lindy Hop and Jazz, and the wonderful dancers and musicians who contributed to the dance we love today.
Our today is Chick Webb!
William Chick Webb was a drummer and bandleader who ran the show at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. As an infant he fell down some stairs - this injury progressed to tuberculosis of the spine, leaving him with a short stature and a badly deformed spine, which caused him to appear hunchbacked. The idea of playing an instrument was suggested by his doctor to "loosen up" his bones. He supported himself as a newspaper boy to save enough money to buy drums, and first played professionally at age 11. At the age of 17 he moved to New York and in 1931 his band became the house band at the Savoy Ballroom.
The Savoy often featured a "Battle of the Bands" where Webb's band would compete with other top bands from opposing bandstands. By the end of the night's battles the dancers seemed always to have voted Chick's band as the best! As a result, Webb was deemed the most worthy recipient to be crowned the first "King of Swing". Basie himself once said that he was just relieved to come away from the contest without embarrassing himself.
Did you know Webb was unable to read music - instead he memorised the arrangements played by the band and conducted from a platform in the center!
