This meta-analysis included 13 studies with 244 total subjects. What they found was that people who consumed a ketogenic diet & resistance trained actually LOST 1.26kg of LBM on average! This is unique in that most studies on diet that utilize resistance training show increases in LBM or maybe slight decreases in LBM (if calorie restricted)
Possible reasons for this are:
Impeded resistance training performance due to low carbohydrate intake
Increased nitrogen losses
Increased loss of LBM fluid
Decreases in muscle protein synthesis and increases in muscle protein breakdown due to reduced insulin
The good news for the ketogenic diet was that the subjects in these studies did lose fat mass. So while the ketogenic diet may be a viable diet for fat loss, it is probably not a great idea for people who wish to increase build as much muscle mass as they can
